PLAYBILL.COM'S BRIEF ENCOUNTER With Gregory Maguire

By Robert Simonson
October 29, 2008

Wicked is arguably the defining Broadway hit of the first decade of the 21st century. It started with Gregory Maguire.

While the musical retelling of the Oz story didn't win the Tony Award for Best Musical, it won a passionately devoted following unmatched by any other show on Broadway. And few others can accurately call themselves a cultural phenomenon, inspiring and informing the lives of the people who see the production. Need we mention its lucrative merchandise empire and a popular backstage tour that is a show unto itself? The wellspring of all this commerce and devotion is Maguire, who penned "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," the 1995 novel that inspired the show. Maguire's life was changed by the show, which transformed him into a successful (and rich) adult novelist. (He had already been a successful writer of children's books.) Maguire recently published his latest work, "A Lion Among Men," another retelling of the Oz story (this time the tale of the Cowardly Lion), but "Wicked" continues to loom large in his life, particularly now that the Broadway production has reached (on Oct. 30) its fifth anniversary on Broadway. Maguire talked to Playbill.com about how it feels to have the Empire State Building lit green in honor of his story.

A Wicked Success: Broadway’s Favorite Witches Turn Five

By Robert Simonson
October 30, 2008

On Oct. 30 the Broadway production of Wicked turns five years old: That's five years of defying gravity, setting box-office records, creating theatre stars and earning some of the most devoted fans around the world.

When the Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical, based on Gregory Maguire's novel retelling the L. Frank Baum tale of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the South, opened at the Gershwin Theatre (Wicked is the longest-running show ever to play that house), the critics gave it mixed reviews. But then the public had its say, and it's been saying it ever since.

DIVA TALK: Chatting with Wicked's Ashford, Bean, Espinosa, Murney and Thompson

DIVA TALK: Chatting with Wicked's Ashford, Bean, Espinosa, Murney and Thompson

By Andrew Gans
October 24, 2008

News, views and reviews about the multi-talented women of the musical theatre and the concert/cabaret stage.

THE GALS OF WICKED
There can be little argument that the biggest theatrical phenomenon of the past five years has been the Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical Wicked, which is based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name. The production, which celebrates its fifth anniversary at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre Oct. 30, has been a massive hit wherever it has played, including sit-down productions in Chicago and Los Angeles, a national touring company, and international stagings in London, Tokyo, Stuttgart and Melbourne (there will soon be a second U.S. national touring company, and the Los Angeles production will transfer to San Francisco in January 2009). Much of the show's success can be credited to the exciting score (years ago, Schwartz gave belting fans "Meadowlark," and his work for Wicked includes the vocally soaring "Defying Gravity," "The Wizard and I" and "No Good Deed" as well as the comic and catchy "Popular" and the touching ballad "I'm Not That Girl") and the its big heart (Holzman's adaptation of Maguire's clever novel offers several touching moments and keeps the audience rooting for its green-skinned heroine). The musical also provides two of the greatest roles for women in recent musical theatre history, and the work of original co-stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel as well as future Glindas and Elphabas — including Annaleigh Ashford, Shoshana Bean, Stephanie J. Block, Kerry Ellis, Eden Espinosa, Megan Hilty, Kendra Kassebaum, Julia Murney, Jennifer Laura Thompson, among others — cannot be discounted. Recently "Diva Talk" posed the same four questions to several of the actresses who have brought Elphaba or Glinda to full life; their answers follow.

So...

I managed to finally lighten up the photos I took in June at the Gershwin stagedoor. O+o;

I think the order of the cast members are:

Chelsea Krombach, Lindsay Northen, Lenny Wolpe, Kathy Santen Deitch, Stephanie J. Block, and David Burnham.

I think that's the order, but suspect that I've gotten the first two mixed up somehow... anyone want to clarify?

My apologies for the graininess and the large photo size.
