Worrisome yet encouraging at the same time.
I'm all for having people doing longer writing samples. Not just the sandwich-y style of opening, three middle paragraphs/arguments, conclusion style of 'essays' that everyone practices for some sort of 'assessment' test, but actual longer papers that I'd want to see - take the class of students to a library, and let them draw references from there... as opposed to whatever passes for the current standards of sampling critical writing.
