Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate by Susan Smith
Unnecessary background: I know the publisher and she's always been very kind in sending advanced copies to me as a gift. I think that I may have met Smitty once last year (I think) in the Fall when she was in T.O. But that has no influence on any opinions contained herein. :)
The book Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate was a serialized web-release that dates back to 1998 when X:WP fan-fiction had yet to reach its zenith, and X:WP uber-fiction was on the rise. Part of the background to Of Drag Kings is its initial release under the Justice House Publishing (JHP) in 2001, and its latest edition through Bold Strokes Publishing.
In comparing the published release against its earlier incarnation (web-postings), I can only draw on my memories of what I had read some seven to eight years ago. The writing overall has gotten tighter, cleaner and easier to read. The major plot points have not changed, but there's certainly an evolution of writing style that is evident.
More importantly, I see Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate as having made a successful transition from being an 'uber-fiction' to the point where without being given its history, you could read the book as original fiction and be satisfied with, and unaware of, the transformation. The back-history that is the foundation to the story is maintained and more importantly, fleshed out to a degree where the story stands on its own.
