Producers Say Minsky's Will Bump and Grind on Broadway in 2009-10

Producers Kevin McCollum and Bob Boyett plan to bring Minsky's — the new Charles Strouse musical now playing in Los Angeles — to Broadway, McCollum told the Associated Press.

The musical with a book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin and songs by Tony Award-winning composer Strouse and lyricist Susan Birkenhead opened at the Ahmanson Theatre on Feb. 6 to mixed reviews, but the team will jump into rewrites and refinements. The reviews of the musical about burlesque king Billy Minsky faulted the libretto, with some critics wishing the experience was more deliciously bawdy.

A summer or fall Broadway opening is being eyed, AP reported. The capitalization would be $11 million.

Minsky's continues to March 1 in Los Angeles.

If Minsky's lands on Broadway in the coming months, it would mean a good year for octogenarian Strouse. Roundabout Theatre Company recently announced that it will produce a revival of his Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway in 2009-10.

Casey Nicholaw (The Drowsy Chaperone, Spamalot) directs and choreographs Minsky's.
