Ha! When I was younger and in school, I'd always end up sicker than a dog on the week/weekends of vacations that would come up. So from whenever I could remember, all throughout high school, I'd come down with a bad cold over the Thanksgiving holiday (early/mid October), the Christmas/New Year holiday (mid/late December), and then March Break (mid March). Once I started University, the timing shifted from March Break to Spring Break (mid February).

For the first five years of work, I never took a sick day although there were various occasions that I felt like death warmed over. It wasn't until I was sternly and professionally advised that I was wrecking a whole lot more than a day and I needed to stay at home and do nothing but count the specks on a ceiling that I started staying away from work on days where I'd be less productive than a slug in the winter.

This year I've been fortunate enough to not need to take time off for illness. As for germ spreading, that's what frequent hand-washing is for!
