Usually I wouldn't step foot into a casino since my track record there is more mediocre than winning. Nonetheless, I did trek up to the casino's Entertainment Centre yesterday evening because Liza Minnelli was giving a concert and well... why resist?

It was a 90 minute set list, and much of it following Liza's at the Palace.

Ah! Back from yesterday's Liza Minnelli concert... awesome seats and a lovely 90 minute set from Liza with a Z. Audio should be forthcoming soon. Preferably before I run off to hot and hotter places.

Additional performances for the 63rd Annual Tony Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS June 7 beginning at 8 PM ET, were announced June 2.

Among those just announced to perform on the telecast celebrating the Broadway theatre's biggest night of the year are Dolly Parton with the cast of 9 to 5: The Musical; Elton John with the cast of Billy Elliot, The Musical; Liza Minnelli; Stockard Channing; and the band Poison with the cast of Rock of Ages.

Two photos that actually turned out. These were taken with a point-and-shoot... so the quality is a lot less desirable than either of the cameras of doom.

So.

Liza Minnelli was at the Roy Thomson Hall last night and it was an energetic almost-two hour show with her, Billy Stritch and her band. I'd recognized her signature songs (from Cabaret, Chicago, and Liza with a Z) and it was a lot of fun. As usual, the demographics skewed towards Toronto's traditional arts-going community which seemed to read very-Caucasian, older, and properly dressed for a night out (sharp and not sloppily which is what I've seen for other theatre-occasions -- jeans with tears? sweatshirts? t-shirts with strategic holes?).

Much fun was had, and my thanks to J. for the great seats. :)

Depending on whether I can actually figure out the song titles soon enough, whatever souvenirs are to be had might be posted over this upcoming holiday.
So, in a fit of frenzy (more like why can't I sleep?!) I tracked this out.

So the Lady Huskies (UConn) won over the Cardinals (Louisville) by a score of 76:54. So congrats to the team. I was a bit of a poofter because I didn't watch the game, and didn't check the score until it was almost over. :)

However, Liza Minnelli was in fine form at the concert/show she did tonight. :) There may be some souvenirs if things turn out ok. :)

I did scribble the first of nine on the train in, and pondered possibilities on the train out. I'm still hoping that I can read my chicken scratch helped by a jolting ride.

News, views and reviews about the multi-talented women of the musical theatre and the concert/cabaret stage.

THE GALS OF WICKED
There can be little argument that the biggest theatrical phenomenon of the past five years has been the Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical Wicked, which is based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name. The production, which celebrates its fifth anniversary at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre Oct. 30, has been a massive hit wherever it has played, including sit-down productions in Chicago and Los Angeles, a national touring company, and international stagings in London, Tokyo, Stuttgart and Melbourne (there will soon be a second U.S. national touring company, and the Los Angeles production will transfer to San Francisco in January 2009). Much of the show's success can be credited to the exciting score (years ago, Schwartz gave belting fans "Meadowlark," and his work for Wicked includes the vocally soaring "Defying Gravity," "The Wizard and I" and "No Good Deed" as well as the comic and catchy "Popular" and the touching ballad "I'm Not That Girl") and the its big heart (Holzman's adaptation of Maguire's clever novel offers several touching moments and keeps the audience rooting for its green-skinned heroine). The musical also provides two of the greatest roles for women in recent musical theatre history, and the work of original co-stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel as well as future Glindas and Elphabas — including Annaleigh Ashford, Shoshana Bean, Stephanie J. Block, Kerry Ellis, Eden Espinosa, Megan Hilty, Kendra Kassebaum, Julia Murney, Jennifer Laura Thompson, among others — cannot be discounted. Recently "Diva Talk" posed the same four questions to several of the actresses who have brought Elphaba or Glinda to full life; their answers follow.
