An Evening with Patti LuPone is something that should never be missed. Combine that with the possibility of Mandy Patinkin on the stage, and suddenly everyone might wonder if the stage is big enough for these two very big diva egos. :) Take comfort in the fact that the songs and the music fill the space so much that the almost Doyle-ian scenery (lightbulbs on a stand?) is just something that changes colour every so often.

The evening was a great selection of songs from both Sondheim, and Rodgers and Hammerstein plus Kern, and Lloyd Webber. The playlist is below:

playlist )

With only a bass and piano accompaniment, and a very receptive audience, this evening was something that didn't depend beautiful orchestras or high-tech acoustics. An Evening with lets both performers sing selections from roles that they might never play: Nellie Forbush from South Pacific, or Billy Bigelow from Carousel. Although very surprised that there were no songs from Sunday in the Park with George or Sweeney Todd, I could also understand possible reasons (one pianist is not quite enough to coax the beautiful sounds that I associate with both shows).

The encore songs were unmicced, and the audio reflects that. Great to hear it in a small intimate space (yes, I can call the Royal Alex that since there are three levels, and even at 17 rows back, it was not cavernous).
"My wife takes pills and I drink. That's the bargain we've struck." -- One of the early lines we hear from Tracy Letts' August: Osage County.

It's on a short run here in the City, but well worth the time (3h20m) to see the production.

This just seals the deal on my future purchases will be so late into the run that it'll be ridiculous. No reason that I can see for me to pony up on funds now to see Fiddler since there might be some ridiculous sale just before it opens.

Same goes for Patti LuPone/Mandy Patinkin concerts in February. And Stuff Happens. And all that other stuff. No reasons for me to plunk out more money ahead of time. :/

Venues Announced for Idina Menzel Concert Tour

By Andrew Gans
June 19, 2008

Cities and venues have been announced for Idina Menzel's upcoming concert tour, which will celebrate the release of her latest solo recording, "I Stand."

In addition to her own songs, Menzel will also include a few tunes from her musical theatre outings during her tour, which launches June 20 in San Diego, CA. In fact, the Tony-winning actress recently told Playbill.com, "It's not such a hard stretch because the shows I've been in are contemporary. I take them out of their context and unplug them a little bit and strip them down and put them more into the context of my show. They seem to work really well, and they're not changed so much that die-hard theatre fans would be disappointed, I don't think. I feel like I'm getting a good response. So that's really nice for me, to kind of join all my worlds together, and it doesn't feel like it's so erratic. It feels cohesive, and it feels like all one artist."

Theatre Critic

"To tell you the truth," says Kyle Riabko, with his most engaging grin, "the thing that scares me the most is the fact that my ass is going to be showing and my grandparents will see it."

The 20-year-old rocker from Saskatchewan, who was virtually unknown a week ago, is talking about the fact that he starts playing the lead role on Broadway next week in the Tony Award-winning, hotter-than-hot musical about youthful sexuality called Spring Awakening.

In an exclusive interview with the Star just before he left for New York, Riabko talked about his crazy career on the Canadian music scene that started when he was 10 and brought him Broadway stardom on his very first trip to New York.

My Fair Lady

2.5* (out of 4)

By Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. Until May 31 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. 416-872-1111

The lady's really loverly, but nothing else around her is of quite the same spectacular calibre.

That's the verdict on the production of My Fair Lady that opened at the Toronto Centre for the Arts on Friday as part of Dancap Productions' season.

The classic Lerner-Loewe musical, based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, is still one of the near-perfect works of the form.

Phonetics professor Henry Higgins bets a friend that – purely through proper speech and manners – he can turn "a crushed cabbage leaf" of a flower seller into "a consort fit for a king."

It's a definite treat to see it again and an equal delight that the classy main hall of the Toronto Centre for the Arts is back in business once more, being used for the purpose for which it was created.

So, I'll begin the slow task of loading both acts onto SS and hopefully it'll all happen before nightfall comes. :)
So, it's taken me roughly two... maybe three hours to get through the first act of My Fair Lady. O+O;

There are more cuts in terms of splitting scenes and songs than I'm usually accustomed to. [35 for the first act]

I'll muddle through Act 2 sometime over this weekend, what with a multitude of dinners and lunches on the schedule. Mother's Day is one giant excuse to ensure that all meals are at restaurants... O+O;

Anyhow, the information for this performance will be posted once I've got both acts in place complete with titles and such.

For now, the following will have to suffice:

CAST: Christopher Cazenove (Professor Henry Higgins), Lisa O'Hare (Eliza Doolittle), Tim Jerome (Alfred P. Doolittle), Walter Charles (Colonel Hugh Pickering), Marni Nixon (Mrs. Higgins), Barbara Marineau (Mrs. Pearce), Justin Bohon (Freddy Eynsford-Hill)

Walter Charles Colonel Hugh Pickering
Barbara Marineau Mrs. Pearce

Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango...

Although I haven't seen this production, I'm more used to hearing the word fandango in Sondheim's The Miller's Son, or else, being used as a Spelling Bee word at the 25th Annual Puntam County Spelling Bee contest. :)

I think I've managed to keep my Sweeney's separate by remembering Michael Cerveris (and David Garry) as bald!Sweeney, David Hess as haired!Sweeney, and Alexander Gemignani as balding!Sweeney.

This afternoon's performance was different from my memories of the opening night (11.06) with small changes in staging and choreography that tightened the production some more. :) With the exception of Mr. Cougher (behind me), it was so easy to be drawn into this revival of Sweeney Todd. :) If it's even possibly, I've fallen even more in thrall with Ms Kaye's Lovett... :)

In a moment of absolute happiness (theatre-induced I promise), I've opted for a second performance of the Sweeney Todd National Tour at the Princess of Wales Theatre. This time, with J on Sunday (11/25).

If all things go according to scheduling, Alexander Gemignani will be stepping into the role of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. :)

I'm so excited... more Sweeney, more Mrs Lovett. :)
